Motorcycle accidents in Orange County can cause significant harm

While individuals in cooler climates may be itching for springtime to come so they can spend more time on their motorcycles, motorcyclists in Northern Orange County are fortunate to have pleasant weather year-round, giving them more opportunities to hit the road on their bikes. Unfortunately, this can lead to more accidents between motorcyclists and other vehicles.

The statistics surrounding motorcycle accidents are grim. In approximately 66 percent of accidents involving a motorcyclist and a second vehicle, the motorcyclist had the right of way, which the motorist ignored, resulting in an accident. In addition, motorcyclists are approximately 26 more likely to be killed in an accident compared to those traveling in a standard motor vehicle.

Motorcycle accidents can be very damaging, both physically, emotionally and financially. Motorcyclists are more exposed to the conditions of the weather and road. Moreover, motorcyclists do not offer riders the same protective infrastructure that can be found in an automobile. In addition, distracted drivers may not notice motorcyclists in their vicinity, leading to an accident. If a motorcyclist is involved in an accident that is not his or her fault, she may want to explore whether there is the possibility of holding the motorist liable.

Like accidents between two automobiles, accidents between a motorcycle and an automobile may be subject to the law of negligence. If a motorcyclist is involved in an accident with another motor vehicle, he or she may want to learn how negligence may apply to his or her case. A motor vehicle accident attorney may be able to educate his or her clients about the laws of negligence and whether they apply to the motorcyclist's situation.
