California pedestrian accident statistics

Even if you do not walk to work, to the neighborhood store or to a friend's house on a regular basis, individuals in California may be considered a pedestrian even for a short amount of time, by simply crossing the street or a parking lot. No matter what the situation is, however, the fact of the matter is that pedestrians involved in traffic accidents could potentially suffer severe injuries or even lose their lives.

At 697 deaths in 2014, California tops the nation in fatal pedestrian accidents. However, nationwide 4,884 individuals lost their lives in fatal pedestrian accidents. 70 percent of these individuals were male. The average age of pedestrians involved in fatal accidents was 47-years-old. 73 percent of these accidents took place in urban areas, and over 25 percent took place in the hours between 6:00 p.m. and 8:59 p.m. Moreover, 14 percent of motorists involved in a pedestrian accident were above the legal blood alcohol concentration limit.

All of this may have you wondering, is walking a dangerous activity? First of all, keep in mind that although pedestrian accidents make up 14 percent of fatal traffic accidents, they only constitute just under 11 percent of trips. Also keep in mind that transportation professionals do not yet have a good way to determine how many miles individuals in the United States walk annually, and therefore the extent to which pedestrians are exposed to traffic.

In the end, while walking in general is a healthful and safe activity, there will still be accidents between pedestrians and motorists that leave the pedestrian seriously injured, or in the worst of circumstances, dead. In situations like this, the pedestrian or his or her survivors may want to determine if they have a cause for legal action. A personal injury lawsuit could be one way they may be able to seek compensation for the injuries and damages they have suffered.
