The statistics regarding alcohol-related accidents are alarming

Every California resident knows that getting behind the wheel of a vehicle after drinking is not only against the law, but dangerous. Driving under the influence of alcohol puts the lives of everyone on the road in jeopardy. It might be alarming to many people to know just how many alcohol-related accidents still occur here and elsewhere in the country, considering the availability and breadth of information regarding the devastation that is left in the wake of these crashes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that here in the United States, 28 people lose their lives each day in an accident involving a drunk driver. That means that every 53 minutes a life is ended due to drinking and driving. Furthermore, approximately $44 billion is spent each year in connection with drunk driving accidents.

In 2014, approximately one-third of all of the traffic-related deaths in the country were attributable to an impaired driver. In that same year, 1,070 children died on the country’s roadways, and 209 of them were in alcohol-related crashes. In fact, 116 of them were in a vehicle being driven by an impaired driver.

Of course, there is also a danger from those who get behind the wheel after using either legal or illegal drugs, and nearly 16 percent of deadly accidents involve a person driving under the influence of drugs. Due to the legalization of marijuana in some states, its use is on the rise and that could affect these numbers.

Each year, the lives of numerous families are changed forever due to alcohol-related accidents. Fortunately, they do not have to rely on the criminal justice system alone in order to find closure and justice. A personal injury or wrongful death claim may be filed in a California civil court seeking damages from the party or parties believed responsible for the injury or loss. If negligence is proved, the victim or the family of a deceased victim may receive a monetary judgment that could assist with the financial losses incurred in the aftermath of these needless and preventable tragedies.
