Police were on the lookout for drunk drivers this Labor Day

Another Labor Day is behind us, but Fullerton residents may have noticed an increased police presence on the road during the holiday weekend. This is because the Orange County Sherriff's Department participated in the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The campaign lasted from August 19 to September 5. During this period the Orange County Sheriff's Department ran a driving under the influence/driver's license checkpoint. In addition to that, police in Orange County also conducted DUI Saturation patrols on certain dates in August. During the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, police throughout the state were on the lookout for signs that individuals were driving under the influence, in order to stop and arrest them.

According to the NHTSA, during the Labor Day weekend of 2014, 40 percent of fatal traffic accidents involved drunk drivers. During that same period, 83 percent of fatal drunk driving accidents took place during the nighttime, from 6:00 p.m. to 5:59 a.m. 2014 had the greatest percentage of fatal drunk driving accidents within the five-year time period spanning between 2010 to 2014. In fact, 28 percent of Labor Day weekend fatal drunk driving accidents in 2014 involved motorists whose blood alcohol concentration was .15 or greater -- twice the legal limit.

It is important to stop drunk drivers from taking to California's roads, not just on holidays but at any time of the year. Unfortunately, drunk drivers will continue to cause serious or even fatal accidents. California residents who have been injured in an accident caused by a drunk driver, or their families if a loved one was killed, may want to see if they are able to pursue legal action against the drunk driver, not only to recover damages for medical expenses, pain and suffering and lost wages, but also to hold that driver accountable.
