When can uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage be useful?

Usually if a person in Fullerton is in a car accident, he or she exchanges insurance information with the other driver. However, what if a person is injured in the crash and the other driver does not have insurance? Or what if a person is injured in a hit-and-run accident, and he or she cannot identify or locate the other driver?

This is when having uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage comes in handy. Uninsured motorist bodily injury insurance is meant to help compensate drivers and passengers in the above scenarios. In general, it pays the medical expenses for the policyholder and the passengers in his or her automobile involved in an accident if the other driver is without automobile insurance, or it is a hit-and-run accident and the driver cannot be located.

In general, a person's uninsured motorist coverage should be equal to his or her bodily injury liability coverage. That way the driver has the same amount of coverage for himself or herself as he or she would for others. The same can be said for underinsured motorist coverage. Underinsured motorist coverage comes into play when the driver responsible for the accident has automobile insurance, but it is not enough to cover the damages the other party suffered in the accident.

Keep in mind that even if a person has uninsured motorist coverage and underinsured motorist coverage, and he or she is in a car accident caused by a negligent driver, his or her medical expenses and other damages may go above and beyond what his or her insurance policy covers. When this is the case, the injured party may want to explore whether filing a personal injury lawsuit is an option for recovering compensation not covered by insurance.
