Motorcyclist lucky to be alive after being hit by a dump truck

While those up north are dealing with snow and single-digit temperatures, Californians are lucky that the seasonable year-round climate allows them to enjoy outdoor activities just about any time of the year. For some, this means hitting the road on their motorcycle. However, as one incident shows, riding a motorcycle is not without its dangers.

Recently, a motorcyclist was hospitalized in critical condition after he was hit by a dump truck. The accident took place in Los Angeles. The motorcyclist was wedged between a car, and the dump truck then proceeded to run over the motorcyclist's head and body. The dump truck driver then fled the scene.

The motorcyclist has suffered severe injuries. Right now his condition is serious, but stable. The Los Angeles Police Department reports that the motorcyclist broke 15 bones, including his ribs. His skull was fractured, and he also had a lung contusion and a tear in his liver. He has had to undergo surgery, and only recently has he been able to have a clear conversation. It could take months for him to fully recover.

The motorcyclist was a freelance music producer and has a partner and son. Injuries such as the ones he suffered can lead to significant medical expenses, which can become especially difficult to cope with if a person cannot work. The loss of income, combined with the pain and suffering endured can be overwhelming.

However, it may be possible in some situations like this, for a person to file a personal injury lawsuit against the negligent driver. Of course, identifying the negligent driver in a hit-and-run case has its challenges, but a thorough investigation can often unearth the responsible party. Therefore, one should not lose hope in such cases. Consulting with a personal injury attorney may be a good first step to take for those who have been injured in hit-and-run accidents or motorcycle accidents and have questions regarding their legal options.
