How common are drunk driving accidents?

It is a sad reality that drunk driving accidents are responsible for thousands of deaths and injuries in California and across the United States each year. It seems that no matter how much of an emphasis public policy makers put on combatting drunk driving, it still occurs. But, just how common are drunk driving accidents?

One estimate puts the number in shocking terms: one person is killed by a drunk driver every 53 minutes. Injuries caused by drunk drivers are even more frequent, occurring every two minutes. The saddest part of these startling figures is that drunk driving is completely preventable. Yet, every day thousands of Americans get behind the wheel of a vehicle after consuming alcohol.

Of all the auto accidents that occur throughout the country each year, it is estimated that approximately 33 percent involve repeat drunk drivers. Families are ripped apart due to the negligence and recklessness of drunk drivers. What options do these families have?

Well, it may be possible for those who are injured in a drunk driving accidents -- or the families of those who lose loved ones -- to file a personal injury lawsuit against the liable driver. Doing so may allow them to seek compensation that can be used to help those families begin to piece their lives back together. Serious injuries result in serious medical expenses, so pursuing financial compensation can become a very important part of post-accident life. The injured party, known as the "plaintiff," will need to prove that the accident, and the resulting injuries, were caused by the drunk driver.
