Car accidents on the rise and the explanations are surprising

Californians should know the dangers of the road. One recent study from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) examined fatal car accident data for 2016 and came to some surprising results on how many were caused by a distracted driver and other issues.

The number of fatal crashes per mile traveled rose by 2.6 percent in 2016 when compared with 2015. But, it is not due to drivers who were operating their vehicles while distracted. The number of fatal accidents increased by 5.6 percent. Part of that is a 2.2 percent rise in traffic. Strangely, with all the attention on texting and driving and other distracting behaviors, the number of fatalities that were linked to a distracted driver reduced by 2.2 percent.

The NHTSA says that while distracted driving is still dangerous -- it was fourth on the list for causes of fatal accidents -- other factors were the top causes of crashes. These include drivers under the influence, speeding and a failure to wear seatbelts.

Drunk drivers were found to be the key factor in nearly 10,500 fatal accidents. This was slightly ahead of people who were not wearing a seatbelt and speeding. Motorcyclist fatalities rose by 5.1 percent. Pedestrian fatalities rose by 9 percent.

What this research shows is that while law enforcement and lawmakers are focusing on ways to stop distracted driving, the longstanding problems that caused many accidents before people had smartphones and devices handy are still an issue. When there is a car accident, it is important to understand how and why it happened, as this can be vital for a legal filing to gain compensation. Medical expenses, lost wages, loss of companionship and more will come to the forefront after a crash, whether it was one with injuries or there was a fatality.

A lawsuit is often the only method of moving forward. A legal professional experienced in helping clients whose lives have been negatively affected by car accidents is essential to pursuing a case.
