California motorcycle officer seriously hurt in highway accident

A secondary accident on a busy California highway resulted in a California Highway Patrol (CHP) motorcycle officer suffering serious bodily injuries and being taken to a hospital. Although the officer is expected to survive, an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The accident occurred after 6:00 in the evening. The motorcycle officer had arrived at the scene of a separate accident to investigate what had occurred. During the investigation the officer was struck by another vehicle that encountered the initial accident site. At this time, it is unclear how many vehicles were involved in the secondary crash or exactly how the officer was hit.

Secondary accidents on California roads and highways are unfortunately not uncommon. When individuals are involved in crashes, they often must stop their vehicles and get out of them to speak with other drivers and to assess the damage that their bodies and vehicles sustained. When other drivers not involved in the initial crashes are negligent and fail to provide the initial accident victims with sufficient space, then more tragic incidents such as this one can occur.

Negligent drivers can impact accident scenes in a number of ways. They can collide with cars that were involved in the initial accidents or they can hit people who are at the scenes of the accidents, such as drivers, passengers and law enforcement officials. Speed, intoxication and distractions can all be factors that lead to secondary collisions at accident sites.

While some people injured in secondary motorcycle accidents recover, not all victims of motorcycle and vehicle accidents are so lucky. Victims of these preventable incidents should determine whether they have the right to litigate their damages and may wish to speak with personal injury lawyers.
